There’s so much mystery still surrounding COVID specifically. They’re all tools in our toolkit, right?ĬS: One of the things I think that is a similarity between HIV and COVID, but mostly with COVID, there is fear. And then there’s always the apps, whether they’re hookup apps like Grindr and Scruff, or more relationship-oriented, like OkCupid or something like that. If you want to meet somebody, you can certainly go to one of these outdoor places and try and meet someone. Many bars and restaurants and other businesses have outdoor seating. I think now that it’s getting warmer in most of the country, outside visits are wonderful-a picnic, just a walk around the block with a friend. I think FaceTime videos, talking to people is a good thing. Things are a little bit more relaxed, but people are still nervous. I just want to be healthy, and I want to hang out with my friends, or even go to a doctor’s appointment, or ride the subway,” you know? The summertime comes and people can go out a little bit more, but this feeling of, “I don’t wanna get sick. People were playing Jackbox Games on the video and that was really, really fun. What do we do to combat that? In the beginning of the pandemic, there were a lot of virtual happy hours, right? And then, sort of, people got sick of that. People are experiencing this loneliness and isolation by just staying in their homes. We can’t have sex either with our sex partners or with other people that we might want to have sex with.Ĭan’t go to bars quite as easily. And so we can’t look for a partner if that’s something that we’re looking for. And all of those things are really good to keep people safe and healthy, but we can’t touch each other. But in this pandemic, people were told to stay inside, work from home, don’t go out, wear a mask. People were passing away, and in this pandemic, people are passing away. You know, we’ve had pandemics in the past.
This pandemic has been going on for a long, long time, and it’s so hard to try and figure out how to navigate that. Kramer: I think loneliness and isolation are the two main things that people are feeling right now. What are some things that you’ve experienced or that you’ve heard some of your clients talk about with regards to loneliness and isolation during this time? Since COVID, a lot of us had to be isolated for a long time. With COVID in the last two years, mental health has really been getting a little bit more focus than it had been maybe before.
